Smartwatches and Activity Trackers
While the smartwatch and the activity tracker (also sometimes referred to as fitness trackers) might look very similar, there is a world of difference between the two small devices when you look at their possible functions more closely.
The Difference between Trackers and Smartwatches
The activity tracker is aptly named, as this is exactly what it does - it tracks your activity, usually relating to fitness. The functions can vary from tracker to tracker, where some function simply as a watch and a pedometer, to count how many steps you take while wearing the device, others have more in depth functions, like calculating calories burned, sleep schedule and quality of sleep and blood pressure. Simply said, the focus of the activity tracker is to track your activity.
Smartwatches can also track your activity, just like the activity tracker, but this is not necessarily their main function. A smartwatch is a small wrist sized computer, and it provides many inbuilt functions other than simply being an activity tracker. It can be used to receive and write messages and calls, used for social media, to show photos, watch videos, listen to music and play games. It can also be used as a tiny GPS, to show you where you are and help you figure out where you are supposed to go.
Smartwatches are complex miniature machines, and this is usually reflected in their price as well, especially compared to the activity tracker.
What To Choose
If you are looking for something to help you monitor your activity, and you have no interest in looking at a small screen when watching things or going on social media, then the usually more budget friendly activity tracker is for you. If you, however, are looking for a device to use for multiple different purposes, both personal and professional, and when it comes to fitness, the smartwatch might be a better fit for you, especially if you also have a bigger budget. A smartwatch can be used as an activity tracker, but an activity tracker can not be used as a smartwatch. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide which option suits you the best.
